Background Our Table Tennis Club first started in September 1968 at Old Chesterton school Battersea Park Road - it operated under the umbrella of Inner London Education Authority until march 1991, the closing date of the ILEA. The club was then re-housed at the York gardens community centre Battersea park road and it was here that we renamed our club York Gardens Table Tennis club in September 1992. We had to move from York Gardens as the community centre was converted to a library and therefore had to find another home. We managed to find a venue at Ernest Bevin college on a temporary basis for two years when we again had to move as they were converting their gyms to a new sport hall. At which point we relocated to our present venue, which is Fircroft Primary school. Achievements During this period we have had some successful achievements with our junior players ie Howard Quarty became British junior champion; our boys, playing for Wandsworth, won the gold in the 2002 LYG (London Youth Games). Darius Knight , who is now training at Sheffield (the England training camp) is aiming to represent Great Britain in the 2012 London Olympics and started his career at York Gardens. York Gardens trained Wandsworth girls team won silver at the 2009 LYG and silver again in the 2010 LYG. Also the York Gardens trained Wandsworth boys team won silver at the 2010 LYG . One of our long term members, Aaron McGibbin , is also training at Sheffield and is aiming to represent Great Britain in the 2012 Para Olympics. We have teams in the British junior league (boys and girls) plus Senior British league (British League is considered to be the premier club team competition in the country) and have won many Divisional titles and player of the season awards. We also have teams in the Wandsworth and District Table Tennis League where the Club has won many Divisional titles and also achieved numerous individual successes in the end of season annual tournament. |
